Save Energy at Home!
Lights, heat, showers. That’s what electricity, natural gas, and water signify for most homeowners. But when it comes to knowing how much electricity, natural gas, and water you use, few of us know what is average usage and what appliances use the most. Below are some useful tips to help you as you take steps towards having a more energy-efficient home.
In the Kitchen
- When cooking small quantities, use your toaster oven, electric skillet, microwave, and other small appliances instead of the stove.
- hen using the dishwasher, run the shortest wash cycle possible and use the no-heat economy drying cycle. Wash full loads only.
- Set the refrigerator at 3°C and the freezer at -18°C for optimum efficiency and food safety.
In the Laundry Room
- Always use a cold water rinse. You’ll save energy and notice fewer wrinkles.
- Clean the lint filter after every dryer load and clean the exhaust duct every year to ensure full efficiency and reduced consumption.
- Avoid over-drying clothes. Over-drying tends to use extra electricity and sets wrinkles.
In the Bathroom
- Check toilets, pipes, and faucets regularly for leaks; repair them immediately. One small leak can waste thousands of litres of water per year.
- Install low-flow showerheads and flow-reducer devices on taps.
In the Home Office
- Turn off unused electrical equipment—lights, computer, monitor, and printer—at the end of each day.
At the Thermostat and Furnace
- A programmable thermostat lets you pre-set the required temperature for different times of the day and week. Set the thermostat lower at night and during times when no one is at home.
- Clean furnace filters regularly. Replace disposable filters or clean the permanent ones whenever they look dirty.
